"When Heaven Was Silent: Integrating Psychology and Theology in the Garden of Gethsemane." By: Dennis Alvarez PsyD LPC
A Book About Mental Health and Spirituality

Preface:
"This book was written at the intersection of three worlds that have shaped my life: clinical practice, community, and faith.
As a clinician, I have sat with countless patients who asked through tears, “What is wrong with me?” In hospital rooms and clinical settings, I have also been present with those who prayed just as earnestly, asking, “Where is God in this?” These questions—clinical and spiritual—are rarely separate in lived experience. They arise together, often in moments of fear, shame, and isolation. Over the years, my work has taught me that psychological suffering is not merely a problem to be managed, explained, or silenced, but a deeply human experience that touches every dimension of a person’s life. What patients are often seeking is not just symptom relief, but understanding, meaning, and reassurance that their suffering does not place them outside the reach of compassion, dignity, or faith.
This book is my attempt to bring those worlds together to show that mental illness is neither purely medical nor purely spiritual, but holistic. It draws on the wisdom of Scripture, the insights of psychology, and the lived experience of those who suffer. I hope that this book will serve as a companion for families, clergy, and clinicians: a guide through the complexity of suffering, a resource for reducing stigma, and a testimony to the hope found in Christ."
